W.Opinions. O.P.A. in the Imp. Subjunctive
Because we have already covered the triggers for this family in the present, we don’t necessarily have to cover all of the options again, (you can flip back if you need to recall some of the triggers) but what we will do is to show examples of some of the main kinds of Opinion triggers when they occur in the past.
If you recall, in the Present Indicative, one important trigger was this:
Es bueno que...
It’s good that...
How this works in the past is like this:
It was good that the mayor spoke about the plans for the village this year.
Fue bueno que el alcalde hablara/ase de los planes para el pueblo este año.
It was good that my mum told me those things when I was young.
Fue bueno que mi madre me dijera/ese esas cosas cuando yo era joven.
¿FUE o ERA?
Once again, this isn’t the place to get into the differences between ERA and FUE, however, just as a rule of thumb; one off things tend to be FUE.
If you remember the sentence,
‘Ayer FUE lunes.’
it can help you to recall that one-off events or actions tend to use the preterite.
